COVID-19 ‘playbook' for Tokyo Games unveiled anti-coronavirus guidelines

NHK — FEB 04
Olympic officials have unveiled anti-coronavirus guidelines to be observed by international sports federations taking part in the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The first “playbook” for international federations was released on Wednesday. It was compiled by the International Olympic Committee, the Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, and others. There are separate playbooks for athletes and media.

International delegations will be required to appoint a COVID-19 liaison officer to be the key contact for all matters related to the coronavirus.

Delegation members must also monitor their health daily for 14 days before traveling to Japan.

They also need to take a coronavirus test within 72 hours of the departure time of their flights to Japan and have another test when they enter the country.

The delegates cannot use public transport in Japan unless they are given permission.

They can only leave their accommodations to go to official games venues and limited additional locations during the 14 days from their arrival.

Repeated or serious failures to comply with the rules may result in the withdrawal of accreditation and the right to participate in the games.

Officials plan to update the playbook no later than April, with more guidance.

Games Delivery Officer Nakamura Hidemasa of the Tokyo Organising Committee says coming up with measures will not be enough. He says the committee will have to give thorough explanations to reassure people the games will be staged safely.

He expressed hope that the playbook will become a starting point toward realizing safe and secure games.
