Tesla posts record quarterly profit

The electric-car maker Tesla has posted record net profit for the latest business quarter. Sales jumped as drivers made the shift to EVs out of concern for the environment.

Tesla says net income topped 1.1 billion dollars in the April-to-June quarter. That was almost 11 times more than the year before. Sales totaled nearly 12 billion dollars, nearly double from a year ago.

The company sold more than 200,000 EVs worldwide in the quarter. That compares with just over 90,000 a year ago.

It says it managed the impact of the global shortage of semiconductors by finding alternative products.

Tesla plans to start making cars in Texas and Germany later this year. It aims to increase average unit sales at a rate of 50 percent a year.
