Media: Israeli spyware used to hack mobile phones
Western media say a spyware program developed by an Israeli cyber-surveillance firm has been used to collect information from journalists and human rights activists around the world.
Media outlets from 10 countries including the Washington Post, reported on Sunday that Pegasus spyware developed by NSO Group of Israel has been used to spy on people.
Pegasus is capable of collecting data from mobile phones. NSO Group says it only sells the software to governments for use against terrorists and criminals.
A global media consortium issued a report after analyzing smartphones they obtained based on a list of more than 50,000 phone numbers that were allegedly leaked.
The owners of the phones include journalists, human rights activists, government officials, and other prominent people.
The report says 37 phones, which is more than half of those analyzed, were found to have been infected with the spyware.
The infected phones include people related to Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi who was killed in Turkey three years ago.
The phone numbers on the list comprise more than 50 countries around the world, with most in 10 countries, including Saudi Arabia, Mexico, and India, which are seen as clients of NSO Group.
NSO Group responded in a statement that the allegations are outrageous and far from reality, and it is considering a defamation lawsuit.
